In the rolling greens of Flint, Michigan, a young girl's love affair with golf began at the tender age of 7. Little did the world know that this budding passion would blossom into the remarkable journey of Shasta Averyhardt, a name synonymous with resilience and achievement in the world of golf.
Guided by unwavering support from her parents, Shasta traversed the junior and amateur circuits, honing her skills and nurturing her competitive spirit. Her talent spoke volumes as she emerged victorious in multiple tournaments, laying the foundation for a stellar career ahead.
Her journey led her to the prestigious halls of Jackson State University, where she not only pursued her studies in business with a focus on accounting but also left an indelible mark on collegiate golf. With a remarkable tally of 9 collegiate tournament victories, including 4 individual SWAC conference championships, Shasta set the bar high, etching her name in the annals of golf history with a conference record of six under par.
In 2011, Shasta's ascent to the pinnacle of professional golf was marked by earning her coveted LPGA Tour card, a testament to her unwavering dedication and formidable talent. As the 4th African American woman to achieve this milestone, she blazed a trail of inspiration for generations to come.
Throughout her illustrious career, Shasta's prowess on the course saw her clinch victory in 7 professional tournaments, alongside gracing the greens of the esteemed US Women’s Open. Her time on the LPGA Epson Tour was punctuated by triumph, earning her the esteemed Rising Star Award in 2012, further solidifying her status as a force to be reckoned with in the golfing world.
However, Shasta's journey was not without its twists and turns. In 2014, she made the courageous decision to step away from the fairways, delving into the realm of accounting as a tax associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. Yet, the siren call of the game proved too potent to resist, beckoning her back to the greens in 2017 to pursue her passion for the LPGA Tour once more.
In a heartwarming reunion with her alma mater in 2018, Jackson State University welcomed back its prodigal daughter with open arms, honoring her with induction into the revered JSU Sports Hall of Fame. It was a moment of triumph, a testament to Shasta's enduring legacy in the world of golf.
As the curtains rise on the 2024 season, Shasta Averyhardt stands poised on the cusp of new horizons, armed with conditional playing status on the Ladies European Tour. Beyond the realms of competition, she lends her voice and expertise to diverse discussions, advocating for women in sports, championing HBCU initiatives, and promoting health and wellness.
Off the course, Shasta embodies a multifaceted spirit, finding solace in travel, indulging in the warmth of local coffee shops, and embracing the wonders of astrology. Her compassion extends to animal welfare, reflecting a deep-seated love for all creatures great and small.
